Some frequently asked questions

Microneedling is a procedure to stimulate your skins own healing mechanism and improve cellular communication. It involves small unit of oscillating needles of varying lengths, between 0.2 – 1mm, on an electric pen which is feathered over the skin, causing micro injury’s thus stimulating the healing process.

Microneedling is used to improve cellular communication and your skin’s own healing mechanism. This improves such skin conditions as ageing, scaring, redness and pigmentation.

A topical anaesthetic cream is available to be applied to the area prior to the treatment for your comfort, however this is optional and most customers have the treatment without. The most sensitive areas generally are the upper lip, forehead and sometimes the neck – but this varies from person to person.

Microneedling regenerates the affected area by stimulating the production and distribution of collagen. This is achieved when the 12 or 16 needle cartridge glides over the skin, creating up to 1920 fractional micro-channels per second that penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, triggering the body’s natural wound healing response. The result is an overall improvement in the appearance of problematic skin breakouts, black/whiteheads (comodones), acne reduced, and scarring minimised.

Acne can affect all skin types and all ages, and may be caused by a combination of genetics, hormone changes, health, stress and or environmental factors. Hormones can stimulate excess sebum (or oil) production, In turn excess oil, dry skin and debris combined can become trapped in the pore. If the pore becomes blocked the acne bacteria can cause inflammation and can make the skin more susceptible to other bacteria.

Treatments for Scarring – remodelling, reduction and/or removal are among the most successful outcomes for non surgical interventions. Particularly with the new Dermapen 4 dedicated scar treatment function that can assist in the treatment of most types of scarring on various parts of the body. Rejuvenating fractional micro channels are formed in the skin that actively break up existing scar tissue. This encourages the production and distribution of new collagen that will work to build healthy, thicker and firmer skin in the scarred region. You will notice that the skin will be smoother and far more even.

Scars result from the biological process of wound repair in the skin. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process. Scarring can be categorised into 3 main categories;

  1. Dark and Light Scars – these superficial scars generally heal and are barely visible within 3-6 months.
  2. Raised Scars – this would include Hypertrophic Scars which are raised, they commonly occur on bendable areas of the skin (back, knees and elbows) and result from the stretching of wound edges while healing. Keloid Scars that tend to grow outside the border of the initial injury, and can become large, painful or itchy.
  3. Indented Scars – The most common scar type and are most often seen on the face (where acne has been present). This is caused when not enough scar tissue has formed and therefore does not match up with the surrounding skin.

Many practitioners and patients have claimed that Microneedling Treatments have been far more effective for the treatment of Stretch Marks than other traditional methods (ie; Laser or superficial creams). The process encourages the production and distribution of new collagen that will progressively remodel the stretch mark scar whilst greatly reducing its appearance.

Stretch marks, clinically known as striae, are a type of scar that occurs when rapid tearing of the dermis stretches collagen fibres. This condition can affect all skin types, conditions and colours, and both sexes. Stretch marks may appear as red or purple lines that fade to a white / silver colour. As stretch marks are a condition of the dermis.

Your skin will be red, inflamed and slightly swollen. It is important to keep your skin out of UV rays for the whole healing process between your treatments. It is important straight after the treatment to not get any dirt on the area treated to avoid any infection. Don’t touch the area and don’t put on any other products that have not been recommended by your Skin Treatment Therapist. Don’t expose your skin to extremes of heat after the treatment.

Our skin’s renewal process slows down as we age, so Microneedling Treatments are the safe, natural alternative to fight the aging process. Clinical Microneedling Treatments along with other combination therapies can produce amazing results.

Microneeling Treatments naturally work from within. The natural wound-healing responses created by Microneedling Treatments will kick start the production of collagen and elastin production.

Microneedling Treatments can commence on the onset or before fine lines take hold. So use as a preventitive measure ideally from the age of 28 onward.

  • Crow’s feet / laughter lines This is often where wrinkles and fine lines show first. Small wrinkles spread outwards from your outer-eye after years of smiling and concentrating.
  • Lipstick lines Delicate areas around the lips form expression lines, causing lipstick “bleeding” and uneven contours.
  • Deeper expression lines Untreated fine lines and wrinkles will develop into deeper expression lines such as “frown lines” on your forehead (known as Glabellar lines).
  • Sagging skin The natural age process, free radical damage and non active skincare regime may lead to saggy skin – areas often neglected such as the neck, decolloté and skin surrounding the ears are often tell-tale areas of aging skin.
  • Uneven skin tone A natural sign of aging can be uneven skin tone, particularly for those who expose their skin regularly to the elements. Sun Damage and pigmentation is a leading indication for those seeking to undergo Microneedling Treatments.

Microneedling Treatments are highly effective for treating hyperpigmentation, particularly on dark skin colours, where laser treatments may not be the safest option (Due to further pigmentation risks). The treatment creates upto 1,920 fractional micro-channels per second into the skin to promote a more balances and normalised cellular function. As melanocytes (pigment producing cells) are directly targeted, a repair and corrective process encourages an even skin tone creating a radiant appearance.

Hyperpigmentation is the discolouration of skin caused by internal physical factors and/or external factors which can include hormonal changes, sun exposure, skin type, trauma and the skin’s natural ageing process. Presenting as areas of uneven skin tone, darkness, age spots or freckles, pigmentation occurs when excess melanin (skin pigment) has been stimulated. Surface pigmentation (Epidermal or Superficial) usually affects lighter skin tones and is usually created by sun damage, for example; Sun spots, Age spots, Freckles. Deeper Pigmentation (Dermal) can be caused by trauma, medications and hormonal factors, and can be manifested by Pigmented acne scarring, Birthmarks, Chloasma/Melasma.

On some areas where the skin density is thinner such as the nose, there could be a small amount of blood spotting which is wiped away with a saline solution during treatment. It is important to let your Skin Treatment Therapist know if you are on any medication and if you suffer from Haemophilia, Hepatitis, HIV, AIDS, any immune disorders or any other blood infections.

skinfocus uses disposable needle units for each of your treatments. These needle units are disposed of in a sharps box and incinerated – so there is no way of cross contamination. Every part of the treatment is sterilised using hospital grade steriliser. The skin is sterilised using chloracetal alcohol skin steriliser which is used throughout the treatment, as is saline solution. Your skin care therapist wears protective clothing, a face mask, protective eye wear and disposable gloves sterilised.

Yes. If you feel you need to moisturise again, please do with the moisturiser your skin Treatment Therapist has recommended and use clean hands. Do not apply make-up or sunscreen on the same day as your appointment. If you have opted for the 30 minute Microneedling treatment, you will need to rinse your skin with warm water (not hot), when home and then apply the moisturiser your Skin Treatment Therapist has recommended.

Microneedling treatments are an effective and safe method for the reduction of enlarged pores. The skin’s own natural wound healing response is activated, producing and distributing new collagen, plumping up and tightening the appearance of the enlarged pore and effectively making them smaller.

Although not a medical condition, enlarged pores are a cosmetic concern for a large number of people. Enlarged or “open” pores can create unslightly uneven texture to the surface of the skin, also making the application of makeup uneven in appearance. Enlarged pores are usually more visible on the nose, cheeks and chin regions and is common among those who have suffered from Acne or problematic skin conditions such as excessive blackheads.
